Today the Toronto Star is running a picture of a man who sexually assaulted a woman on the subway. A little over a month ago a similar story ran on the Star, that case dealing with an incident of sexual assault on a streetcar.
Almost a year ago, I was assaulted (for the second time, it should be noted) while riding the subway with my boyfriend. Months later I came across an almost buried article on CBC’s news website, featuring the picture of a man suspected in numerous sexual assaults on the TTC, the description of the man’s assault patterns matching my first incident.
Women deserve to not be sexually assaulted while taking public transit. They also deserve to have as much information to protect themselves as possible. If the man pictured in the link is assaulting women, we deserve to see and know his face so we can further protect ourselves. That the TTC is not alerting those who use it daily to possible predators is appalling, and absolutely makes them complicit in any further attacks by this man.
When I called to report my incident the first time, the woman I spoke to from the TTC did not give any indication that there was a history of such assaults, despite the fact that what I reported was down to the littlest detail exactly the same as what had been reported by dozens of other women.
Further, the TTC does not warn or seek to inform women about current incidences of sexual assault on its vehicles. Check out their website - no mention of the story the Star is currently reporting. You won’t see this man’s picture on any of the in station screens, either. No, no - far more important to bring you advertisements than to warn you of potential sexual predators.
The TTC has an obligation to its riders to warn them when they know there is a sexual predator wandering around assaulting women. Until they start routinely making reports and pictures public, we have no option but to believe the TTC just doesn’t care about sexual assault that occurs on TTC property.
Your move, TTC.
