I’m sorry, Maine. I’m sorry, United States. I’m sorry, world. I’m sorry that we’re not there yet and I’m sorry that (it’s beginning to look like) we’ll never get there.
I’m sorry, LGBT community. I’m sorry that I, by chance, was born into a better world than you. I’m sorry that I won’t ever know your pain and your frustration and your disappointment. I’m sorry that I could go about my life, merrily marrying whomever I please, as often as I please, with neither restrictions nor barriers.
I will never understand those who champion inequality. I will never understand those who resist progress. I will never understand the rage against change, the disgust for difference, the steadfast unwillingness to be better.
I’m sorry that democracy means also accounting for the hate-filled, ignorant assholes. More than anything, I’m sorry that no amount of feeling sorry will effect change.
